Robert R. Snyder

Imagineer and
Business Technologist

Bob is an entrepreneur, Imagineer, and Business Technologist with his own company: Snyder Smart Systems. He helps businesses, individuals and organizations with their technology needs. He builds, upgrades and occasionally repairs hardware; specifies and installs systems, software, hardware, networks, Internet solutions, and web sites. He then provides instruction on use and operation to his clients and provides continued support as required. He provides a turnkey operation for nearly any need.

Bob is a well-rounded individual. He has designed and installed electrical and electronic systems on ships and yachts, been a television studio engineer, designed and installed a complete broadcast television studio for a NASA satellite project, and been involved in computers since before the days of CP/M (pre-IBM PC's).

His approach has always been geared to his client. The first step is always a discussion and determination of what exactly are the goals or overall requirements. This includes the introduction of system analysis as it is applied to their business and the introduction of new ideas or approaches that may fulfill their overall business goals, not just the current technology goals. There is more than technology involved with business applications and Bob's background in business, accounting, promotions, marketing, and presentations helps him look at the entire picture, not just a quick technofix. Although a technofix always feels good, it may not be what is really needed. The magic is not in the box but in how one uses the box! Some clients are surprised when Bob suggests a different or better approach that has them going to someone else; but remember, the client always comes first.

The second step is to design the system or approach to attain these goals, and then to apply the plan, supplying the necessary components either from Bob or other vendors.

The final step is to instruct the client and personnel in the operation, maintenance and modification of the systems to meet their continued and changing requirements. The idea is to teach the client enough to no longer require his services for the daily operation of their systems. This may seem anti-productive from a business standpoint. (He might lose customers because they no longer need his support on a daily basis.) However, his clients always come back when they need something that is beyond their current capabilities. So in the long run, he has not lost a customer but gained a long-term client. He has found that most clients prefer to be able to support their own systems rather than to be married to a specific consultant; however, marriage is always available if that is the client's desired approach.

Solar Turbines, Incorporated Bob currently owns Snyder Smart Systems and is using this unique approach for a varied client base. For several years we were a vendor for Solar Turbines, Incorporated, and provided presentational and technical support for a group of 20 artists, editors and photographers in their Marketing and Communications department. We also spearheaded the production team for presentations to the industry by Solar Turbines at their Turbo Technology Seminars and Gas Turbine User's Association presentations for three years.

We continue to support other small businesses building hardware, integrating software, and installing network and Internet solutions. Simply, we provide a complete turnkey approach using the latest technologies to match your business needs. This complete approach is even more available to the small and medium businesses because of the dramatic decrease in costs. Snyder Smart Systems is a high tech team of personnel, and we often include a crew of consultants, artists, and technicians as required for special projects.

We have made several network installations for small businesses. Each included Microsoft Small Business Server, which we continue to support today.

We provide new and competitive services with hardware such as our Smart-Web-In-A-Box the perfect Internet connection and network server, private consultation, and our specialized and personal web hosting services.

Some of our current clients include: Nalpak Sales, Little House Family Services, Dr. Farris MD, Southern California Cardiology Medical Group, Dapper Tire, Saint John Catholic Church, plus many Web Hosting clients.

KUED-TV Logo Bob's background has always been in the technologies. He started as an amateur radio operator in his high school days and continued from there. He entered the University of Utah as an electronics engineering major with a computer science minor, and started working concurrently at KUED-TV as an engineer as his classes started. He has been an audio engineer, video and on-air engineer, video tape editor, location shoot engineer, and even designed and built television studio equipment for the station and university's closed circuit applications. During one of his summers he traveled to Australia and worked for ATV Channel 0 in Melbourne for three months.

His next project was an association with the Federation of Rocky Mountain States - Satellite Technology Demonstration. This was the pioneering project supported by NASA and HEW (Health Education and Welfare), to demonstrate the feasibility of a satellite strong enough for earth reception with a small 10' back-yard dish. Before this project, signal reception required 30' or larger dishes and were not feasible for the general public. Bob designed and managed the installation of a broadcast quality television studio for the uplink facility located in Denver, Colorado. His combined efforts saved the terminal project many thousands of dollars by obtaining and moving a complete studio from Levitz Furniture on a lease basis, thus saving the outright purchase costs of a new system. ATS-F

He then installed ten downlink stations. The ATS-F (the before launch name or the  ATS-6  the after launch name) satellite was launched while Bob was installing the 10 earth stations. He located signals from the satellite when they were not supposed to be available. This discovery lead to the determination of an error in the design of the downlink dishes that was corrected on-site without having to retrofit more than 100 sites, thus saving thousands of dollars in conversion costs.

Merrywing Bob met his wife Posy, a television writer and producer, while they were both at the satellite project. Bob and Posy later had a film production company and custom photo lab for a time before they decided to move to San Diego, buy a boat and go cruising. They lived on their 42' yawl for 5 years, preparing the boat and themselves for three years and cruising the coast of Mexico and the Sea of Cortez for almost two years. While on the boat, Bob provided electrical and electronics services to boat owners. After their return, his last two marine projects included converting an ocean-going buoy tender into a sport fisher for the United States Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, and designing and converting a 108' island trader ketch from a cargo ship to a luxury private yacht. Both conversions were accomplished and passed Coast Guard inspection for commercial use.

Epson America Bob then started his own computer support company, SnyderScope International, during the age of CP/M. After the advent of the IBM-PC he continued to support the Epson line of CP/M computers and was one of two companies in the nation recommended by Epson for hardware, software and technical support. The company had a customer base of over 10,000 users and a support staff of several employees.

Mexico Map During this same time Bob and Posy started a company that imported technical and nautical maps and books from the Mexican government printing office. Mexico printed more than 100,000 different maps, charts and books. They became the official United States distributor for the Mexican Government, and only closed the business when the earthquake in Mexico stopped all shipments of maps from Mexico for many years.

Posy and Bob also had a mail order company that supplied gourmet food for exotic birds called Flights of Fancy Mail Order. Posy's daughter was the creator and manufacturer of the nutritional recipes that have become a very popular product. This business was transferred to Lea, Posy's daughter and has since been closed.

As CP/M died out he continued with computer systems by updating to the new DOS format and helping customers with his new company, Snyder Smart Systems. He continues to operate the company today with new and innovative products and services.

NAB Bob has also provided technical and production support for trade shows and product presentations. He has displayed at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) in Las Vegas (the second largest trade show in Las Vegas next to Comdex), ShowBiz Expo trade show in Los Angeles and Hollywood, and many other shows. He has also coordinated presentations for Solar Turbines and their tri-annual Turbine Technology Seminar in San Diego.

Bob has continued his education beyond the University of Utah on a regular basis and has included special training in several types of television broadcast equipment, computers, network operating systems, accounting systems, marketing, business practices and is even a certified graphologist (handwriting analyst).

SDGS He was first vice president of the San Diego Genealogical Society , where he donated his time to the board of directors and often teaches technical aspects of computers and the Internet to the membership as it applies to genealogy. He is also a member of the San Diego Historical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

His wife, Posy, passed away in December of 2000 of cancer. Since then, he has married a wonderful woman, Ramona, and has moved his business to Loveland, Colorado. Where he is continuing his Internet Hosting services, along with his business technology consulting services.
